Storm Forecasted Today, Oct 13

Goleta Sandbag Stations Stocked and Open

Post Date:10/13/2025 10:26 AM

The National Weather Service is forecasting a significant storm for Santa Barbara County expected to arrive later today, Monday, October 13. The following conditions are possible countywide:

  • Hail and lightning
  • Brief, heavy rainfall
  • Dangerous flash flooding
  • Flooding in low-lying areas and strong winds
  • Shallow debris flows for locations in and beneath recent wildfire burn areas including the Gifford Fire and Lake Fire.

Detailed weather forecasts are available at https://www.weather.gov/lox/.

The Goleta Public Works team is here for you. As the first signs of fall begin to show, our Public Works team is already hard at work preparing for the challenges that come with the rainy season. While many people notice the rain only when it starts to fall, for Public Works, preparation begins weeks, and sometimes months, in advance.

Behind the scenes, Public Works is inspecting and clearing storm drains, culverts, and catch basins across the City to ensure they’re free of debris and ready to handle increased water flow. Crews also assess areas prone to localized flooding and make proactive adjustments, from grading ditches to installing erosion control barriers. Teams also prepare for pre-storm inspections in areas recently impacted by construction or those that may be prone to impacts.

Thank you Goleta Public Works!

Sandbags Stations

The City of Goleta has two self-serve sandbag stations that are stocked and ready for residents:

  • Fire Station 11 (6901 Frey Way and Storke Road just south of Santa Felicia, across from the main post office)
  • Fire Station 14 (320 Los Carneros Road next to the Stow House Museum lot)

Here are some things you should know about sandbag pick up:

  • Sand and bags are available on a first come, first served basis.
  • Bring your shovel to fill the bags.
  • Pick up is open during daylight hours, seven days/week.
  • 20 bag limit (additional bags can be purchased at home improvement stores).
  • Bags are intended for Goleta community members! Please don't take more than you need to allow others who may need the sand and bags more.
  • It is easiest to fill the bags with two people — one to hold the bag and the other to shovel the sand.

The City of Goleta is monitoring the storm and is in contact with emergency officials. For the latest information and tips, visit Santa Barbara County's ReadySBC webpage.
