Goleta Valley Library's Reading Corner - April 2019

Post Date:04/11/2019 1:02 PM

It's an exciting time for the Library! We are busy putting together wonderful programs for the community and are getting ready to take over management of the Buellton and Solvang Libraries. We are in need of volunteers to help us re-barcode their collections before July 1. This is similar to what all of the wonderful volunteers did for our Library at this time last year, but fortunately, the Buellton and Solvang collections are much smaller. If you are interested in helping, please contact me at 805-562-5502 or

Have you seen our redesigned website, It has lots of great resources and information which you can learn more about below.

Stay up-to-date on what’s happening at the Library by following us on our Facebook page (@GoletaValley Library)! We post daily about programs, books, websites, and more.

Goleta Valley Library Director

Library of Things

Some of you may remember that back in the 1960’s and 70’s, public libraries loaned more than books, including things like artwork and fishing poles. The Goleta Valley Library is bringing back the idea of loaning out non-traditional items. Our Library of Things collection is debuting later this month! Among the cool things you will be able to borrow for three weeks at a time are:

  • Virtual reality goggles
  • Robots for kids to learn coding
  • Portable record player
  • Machine for transferring videocassette information onto DVDs
  • Machine for transferring audiocassette information onto USB drives
  • Binoculars
  • Portable disc drives for your laptop or computer
  • UV flashlight
  • Cake pans
  • Games

New York Times Access - Free!

Thanks to the California State Library, patrons now have full access to the New York Times online via our website! Click here to create an account in just seconds and have total access to this amazing resource.

Suggest a Purchase

Did you know you can request that the Library purchase titles? If we do not own a title that you want, fill out our “Suggest a Purchase” form. If the item is available from our book and audiovisual vendors, we will most likely be able to order it for the Library collection (it must meet our Collection Development Policy standards). We will let you know if we order it so that you can place a hold request.

Baby & Me

Have a little one 14 months old or younger? You won’t want to miss our Baby & Me program on Thursdays from 11:15 – 11:45 a.m. In this very relaxed program, our resident staff Baby Whisperer, Nicole, leads the group in a number of entertaining activities such as songs, lap bounces, a short story, bubbles, parachute play and community building. Think your baby won’t pay attention? Let Nicole work her magic!

Knitting & Crocheting for Charitable Organizations

The Goodland Yarnworks group meets at the Goleta Valley Library every Wednesday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. to create items that go to various charities. This great group of volunteers enjoy socializing while they create hats for premature babies and mittens and hats for veterans. Join them for a great time while doing good work.
