Don’t Delay, Complete your Census Online Today at My2020Census.gov
The City of Goleta is off to a great start according to preliminary self-response Census 2020 data. The numbers show that as of 10:00 a.m. today, March 25, 2020, almost 31% of Goleta households have completed their Census which is higher than the State of California’s average of 23% and the national average of 23.6%. While we are still early in the process and there is much work to be done to make sure Goleta has 100% participation, we are definitely encouraged by what we are seeing so far.
By now you should have received your invitation in the mail from the U.S Census. Even though the time period to respond has been extended due to the COVID-19 crisis, please don’t delay, complete your census today. Filling out the Census is easier than ever before, go online to My2020Census.gov.
City of Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte said, "With Governor Newsom's stay at home order, filling out the census is something important you can do easily in a few minutes from the comfort of your own home. It takes less than 10 minutes. So easy!" She added that a complete census is strongly linked to maintaining vital services such as public health. Mayor Perotte continued, " For the foreseeable future, it is likely that Federal, and State governments will be distributing emergency funding in proportion to our population. We must ensure that everyone is counted so we receive our fair share."
The City is proud of our Make Goleta Count/Haz Que Cuente Goleta campaign which has helped spread the word about the importance of participating in the Census. Please watch and share our Make Goleta Count video which is being played on television. The advertisement is also being played in both English and Spanish on several local radio stations. We hope the video is shared widely by our Goleta stakeholders and community members. We appreciate you doing your part to Make Goleta Count!
Please remember when filling out your Census to count everyone in your household even if they are not family members. It’s important to know that the 2020 Census is confidential and your personal information, by law, can’t be shared.
This is the first time the Census can be completed online. Anyone who does not respond will have a paper questionnaire mailed to them at a later date. A phone number was also included in the mailing from the U.S. Census Bureau for anyone that needs help completing the census.
The census creates jobs, helps plan for the future, and supports public safety and emergency preparedness. The following items are at stake for Goleta if there is an undercount in the 2020 census:
- Loss of revenue for TEN years
- Federal funding for Community Development Block Grants
- Library funding
- Gas tax related revenue for road repairs
- Special funding based on population
- District election boundaries
