You Want to Run for Office? 

The next general municipal election will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 for the election of two council seats and one mayoral seat.

The City Clerk is a candidate’s primary source of information during the nomination and election process. To best serve you, individuals interested in running for office are encouraged to contact City Clerk Deborah Lopez to ask questions. To ensure safety and accessibility during the COVID-19 pandemic, an appointment will be required for all of the following:

  • Issuance of Nomination Documents
  • Review of Nomination Documents prior to submission
  • Submission of Nomination Documents

Nomination Period (Election Code Section 10220): July 13 - August 7, 2020

This is the period when individuals officially receive, circulate and file nomination papers for candidacy. Monday, July 13, 2020, at 8:00 a.m., will be the first date and time that Nomination Papers will be available at the City Clerk's Office. Please call (805) 961-7505 to schedule an appointment to obtain the necessary nomination papers. No filing fee is required. The papers will only be issued to the candidate.

Friday, August 7, 2020 at 12:00 p.m., will be the final date and time for filing of any Nomination Papers. It is recommended the candidate file as far in advance of the deadline as possible, so any deficiency in the filing may be found and cleared in time to qualify by the deadline.

Eligibility for Candidacy

To be eligible to run for City Council, a person must be a registered voter of Goleta at the time nomination papers are issued. In order to qualify as a registered voter in Goleta you must be:

  • A United States citizen
  • A resident of Goleta
  • At least 18 years of age on the date of the next election
  • Not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction

Candidates must wait until the nomination period begins to obtain a nomination packet from the City Clerk. Forms include, but are not limited to, the Nomination Paper, Ballot Designation Worksheet, Candidate Statement (optional), Code of Fair Campaign Practices (optional), Statement of Economic Interests Form 700, and Campaign Finance Disclosure statements.
