Construction has begun and is anticipated to be completed in the spring. The project will include a number of upgrades designed to improve accessibility, functionality, and sustainability at the park.

Planned improvements include:

• Replacement of the existing playground equipment
• Installation of defined turf areas
• Drought-tolerant landscaping
• Drainage improvements
• Adjustments to the walkway alignment to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements

Construction activities are scheduled to take place Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. While every effort will be made to minimize impacts to nearby residents, temporary disruptions may occur during construction.

Please note that the construction schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances. The City appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during this project.

On October 7, 2025, the City Council approved a Construction, Management, Inspection, and Material Testing Contract for the Mathilda Park Improvements Project. The Construction Contract was awarded to KYA Services LLC and the City Council authorized the City Manager to authorize a Professional Services Agreement with Vanir Construction for Construction Management, Inspection, and Material Testing.

The project is funded through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program, the OGALS Propositions 68 Per Capita Funding, and the City's General Fund. Construction is expected to begin and conclude in the first quarter of 2026.

The City Council authorized staff to advertise a notice inviting constructions bids for the Mathilda Park Improvement Project on November 7, 2023. On December 2, 2024, the bid documents were published on PlanetBids and bidding officially opened on December 30, 2024. 

The City received a total of two bids for the project and both bids received were over the engineer's estimate. On March 18, 2025, staff presented an item to City Council to reject all bids and authorize to call for new bids for the project. In an effort to reduce project costs, staff worked with the design team to reduce and refine the scope and provide more clarity in the construction bid documents and specifications. 

The playground at Mathilda Park has water trapped below the surface , causing damage to the surfacing material as well as possible damage to the playground equipment. During rain events, the water does not drain, causing slippery surfaces, mildew and stagnant water at times. In addition improvements are needed for the walkway from the sidewalk to the playground as the current slopes exceed ADA requirements.
