The project constructed pedestrian activated Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) over travel lanes on Hollister Avenue at Orange Avenue to provide an additional visual cue to alert motorists when a pedestrian wishes to cross the street.
Purpose and Need
Drivers along Hollister Avenue have a low compliance rate to stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk. The existing crosswalk does not seem to capture the driver’s attention and pedestrians must wait for gaps in traffic to cross the street safely. The Rapid Flashing Beacons system has success in grabbing drivers’ attention and increasing compliance to stop for pedestrians at the crosswalk.
Strategic Plan Goals
